The Community Enhancement Association – CEA and the Town of Truro are extremely proud to commemorate the first official Emancipation Day in Nova Scotia! There will be a few events taking place this weekend to commemorate this important day.

The recognition of Emancipation Day (August 1st) is a time for every Nova Scotian to honour our African heritage and learn more about the history of slavery in Canada and its effects that continue to impact all our lives today.

Nova Scotia has officially designated August 1st as Emancipation Day in acknowledgement of our shared history of the enslavement of people of Afrikan ancestry here in Canada. Emancipation Day reflects on this shared history and acknowledges the strength and perseverance of Black people in Canada.

The African Nova Scotian Community Strategy and the Community Enhancement Association have collaborated to commemorate Emancipation Day at Stan “Chook” Maxwell Park on Sunday, August 1st, 2021.

A flag raising of the Pan African Flag will be held at the Truro Town Hall on Friday July, 30th, 2021 at 1:00pm with the pouring of libation to set the tone and purpose for the event.

A community event is planned for Sunday August 1st at Stan “Chook” Maxwell Park beginning at 2:00pm.
