Ellen Butts opened Making Friends Preschool 26 years ago this October, with a long-time friend. Ellen has since taken over the business on her own and enjoys her job and time spent with the children at her preschool.
When Making Friends Preschool first started, they offered childcare in the mornings, however, the business quickly grew and they expanded to offering childcare in the mornings and afternoons every weekday. Ellen and her staff have since switched to a full-time day care offering a fun and educational environment for all children.

Making Friends Preschool is located in St Andrews United Church. The church has been kind to open their space up to the preschool since the beginning. When Making Friends Preschool opened, they needed a location for their playground, the church was kind enough to let them use the grass on their front lawn. The children can see garbage trucks, police cars, school busses, and fire trucks busy at work as they play on the playground.
The preschool is in a very central location in Downtown Truro which means the children can get out and go for walks frequently. Ellen loves how close everything is to the preschool. “With everything in walking distance even the little children are able to get out and explore the town,” says Ellen. The preschool children visit the Truro fire station, the library and even say hi to the police officers on their way by. “The community involvement is phenomenal,” Ellen remarks. Being so central and able to walk gives the children a chance to get some fresh air and explore their town.

Ellen is very proud of Truro and how much it has developed. She loves the events in Downtown Truro and the new and improved Civic Square. She admires people who stop at the outdoor rink in the winter and skate. Something else Ellen loves about Truro is that the Town repurposes old buildings. She loves that the Farmers’ Market is in the old fire station.
Another highlight of Making Friends Preschool is Murphy, Ellen’s dog. Murphy has grown up at the preschool and has become a mom too many of the children. “The children absolutely love Murphy,” she says, “she follows them around watching them as they play.” Some of the families even attend Making Friends Preschool to see Murphy regularly.

Ellen describes Making Friends Preschool as a welcoming, relaxed and opened environment. Some of the children that previously went to the preschool come back to visit Ellen when they graduate, or some even bring their own children there for daycare. “Making Friends has a very open-door policy,” Ellen explains. Many specialists visit the preschool to ensure the children have all the supports they need to achieve.
Making Friends Preschool currently has a waitlist, however you can have your child added to the waitlist. Check out their website or give them a call and fill out the forms to get your child on the list. “With summer coming and children going off to school in the fall spots are opening up,” says Ellen.
