Last week, we had the opportunity to meet with Melissa, the owner of Cobequid Dance Academy ( CDA ) as they celebrate their 10th year in business. At 15 Arlington Pl in Downtown Truro, CDA provides a diverse range of classes catering to all age groups and dance styles.

Looking back on a decade of running CDA and leveraging over 24 years experience of teaching dance, Melissa reveals that her initial motivation was to establish a program with growth potential. Former programs in the community were unable to grow & expand, motivating Melissa to establish her venture. True to her vision, the business has thrived & evolved significantly over the past ten years.

When discussing her most popular classes, Melissa expressed that currently, Hip Hop and Ballet are the favourites among her over 300 students, However, it’s clear that the CDA is more than just a dance studio it is a second home for many of its students & their dedicated staff. The studio has become a staple in the Downtown Truro community.

If you are new to dance and seeking something fresh, Melissa’s advice is simple: reach out! She emphasizes that CDA excels at assisting individuals in crafting a program that aligns with their goals & preferences. Regardless of your dance background, CDA provides a diverse range of classes, & genres tailored to your needs.

Melissa highlights the vital role of her incredible team in their success thus far. This team includes six senior faculty, dedicated student teachers, and Jen the office administrator extraordinaire!

The studio has several exciting events planned for the coming months. First up, on May 12th at CEC’s Portia White Auditorium, they will hold their annual Company Show which features CDA’s Cobequid Young Company alongside guest dancers from Onset Dance (Dartmouth), Coastal Dance (Dartmouth) and First City School of Dance (St. John, NB). Additionally, there will be end-of-year recitals which feature every CDA student during the last weekend in May & first weekend in June. Even when summer arrives CDA dancers don’t take a break! Throughout July, CDA is offering Summer Dance Day Camps every week for ages 5 to 12. For older participants seeking a more intense experience, CDA’s Summer Dance Intensive is running from August 2nd to 9th.
